Subaru Rally Driver Breaks Mt. Washington Hill Climb Record

Mount Washington was true to its reputation last weekend as bad weather forced competitors to stay on the lower half of the historic 7.6 mile Mt. Washington Auto Road as they practiced for one of the oldest motorsports events in the United States, the Climb to the Clouds.  After rain showers and fog on Friday and Saturday, the weather broke long enough on Sunday for Subaru of America, Inc. Subaru Rally Team USA driver David Higgins to break the long standing record driving his 2011 Subaru WRX STI rally car.

Subaru Rally Driver Breaks Mt. Washington Hill Climb RecordThe four classes consisting of 70 competitors were able to complete two timed laps each before the fog rolled in once again on Sunday.  It was all the time Higgins needed to break the standing Mt. Washington “Climb To The Clouds” Hill Climb record held by Frank Sprongl set in 1998 by more than 30-seconds with an official time of 6 minutes 11.54 seconds.  The last competitor to run, Higgins broke the record by over 20 seconds on his first attempt and then surpassed the record by an additional eight seconds on his second run.

“It was a very big challenge because the road was still wet in spots and would turn very slick suddenly.  With the clouds the visibility was so low I could hardly see past the hood of my car,” explained Higgins.  “Our Subaru is setup perfectly for a road like this but I have never raced here before and it was a lot of work to try to learn the course.  It’s fantastic to have the record at such a prestigious event.”

Mt. Washington is in the Presidential range of the White Mountains and is known for its extreme conditions where scientists have been studying and researching weather trends since the 1870’s.   First opened in 1861 as the Mt. Washington Carriage Road, the Mt. Washington Auto Road is the country’s oldest man-made attraction. The 7.6-mile Mt. Washington Auto Road is one of the ultimate challenges for driver and automobile.  The tree lined winding blacktop and gravel road has steep drop-offs as it climbs to the 6,288-foot summit of the Northeast’s tallest peak.  One of the oldest motorsports events in the United States, the Climb to the Clouds was first run in 1904, seven years before the first 500-mile race in Indianapolis and twelve years prior to Colorado’s inaugural Pikes Peak International Hill Climb

Organized by Vermont SportsCar and sanctioned by the Sports Car Club of New Hampshire, the 2011 Mt. Washington Hill Climb was one of several events celebrating the 150th anniversary of the Mt. Washington Auto Road.Related Articles:

Basic principal

The System

The Air Conditioning system is a closed system, consisting of two sections. The section that produces the cooling effect (Low pressure) runs from the expansion valve (3) as a liquid, through the evaporator (4) then back through the expansion valve (3) as a vapour.

The Compressor & Condenser

The vapour from the expansion valve (3) travels to the compressor (2) compressing the vapour condenses it into a heated liquid (High pressure). The liquid then moves to the condenser (1) where it is cooled.

The Drier

The function of the drier (5) is to remove any air bubbles or impurities from the refrigerant. It protects the whole system for damage caused by contamination.

The Evaporator & Expansion valve

The evaporator (4) is basically the same as the condenser: A large surface works as a heat exchanger similar to a radiator. The expansion valve (3) relieves the liquid refrigerant into the evaporator. Due to the expansion the refrigerant changes from liquid back to gaseous. The process of evaporation demands a lot of heat, which is absorbed from the car’s interior. If the refrigerant passed the evaporator it flows back to the compressor. This is called the low-pressured side.
